Hey, hey! I was actually able to cut the fat and keep it short this month! Probably because I worked like crazy and moved to a different state…Enjoy!
DESIGN
- Ad Campaign Uses Powerful Photographs to Explain that Facebook Likes Don’t Help. Absolutely brilliant ad campaign. You have to check it out.
- aki-inomata.com’s hermit crab series (one picture above). Lovely combination of nature and art. I think maybe I was so facinated by it because I just watched a documentary about bivalves on the plane to California.
- Jay Z Video Puts Hip-Hop And Art Back In The Same Room (via NPR). I love how accessible this makes art. I feel like a good number of people feel like art is something they “should-do-but-don’t-really-want-to-because-I-don’t-get-it.” And this piece just brings art to life in a way that is so diagestible. It shows you how blurred the line is between performance art and concerts (is there a line?).
- 12 Iconic Magazine Covers You’ll Never Forget (via Mashable). The title makes it seem like those cheesy email forwards from the office-admin, but I really enjoyed reading the little descriptions/histories of the photos.
- 40 Maps that will help you make sense of the world. Wide range of maps, but so interesting. Check it out! Come on, you know you don’t want to do that thing you have to do.
SOCIAL
- Former High-School Teacher Congressman Irks GOP By Marking Their Memos With A Red Pen. Thought this was really cute: Scrutinizing a government memo for the same quality teachers look for in student’s papers. Makes sense.
- In 20 Years, We’re All Going To Realize This Apple Ad Is Nuts (via Co.Design). Yes, I completely agree with the author (Co.Design, can I please work for you?!). Ther eis a new Apple commerical that just lovingly shows all the different situations where people are focused on their technology instead of what’s actually happening around them as if it’s a good thing.
- Sesame Street reaches out to 2.7 million American children with an incarcerated parent. Recently Sesame Street introduced a character with an incarcerated parent and you are reminded how surprisingly progressive Sesame Street has always been.
- What Education Looks Like: Photos From the Classrooms Around the World (via GOOD). I really love these world-view photosets.
- Robin Thicke’s Video Made Us Sick — So We Made Our Own. Oh you know, more hastag-sexism stuff. But a cute little twist on it was this author’s music-video paraody of it.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
- World’s Biggest Cave Found in Vietnam. Representin’! “At 262-by-262 feet (80-by-80 meters) in most places, the Son Doong cave beats out the previous world-record holder, Deer Cave in the Malaysian section of the island of Borneo.”
- The Healing Power of Cat Purrs (infographic). As if you needed another reason to love cats.
- How Much Caffeine Is in Your Energy Drink? I ended up looking this up after meeting some of the people who make Runa tea, a an all-natural tea that has more caffeine than a Red Bull.
MEDIA
- To Grandmother’s House We Go! (via GOOD & The Wonderist). Photos of grandmas from around the world with the ingredients to make their favorite dishes.
- I Never Want to Stop Watching This Incredible Vine Compilation Video (via Gizmodo). Ok, despite the dumb cover picture, it’s a cute little compilation of Vine movie compilations. What I really liked about it, is that people everywhere are so excited to create these very creative 15-second videos. I love the thought of planning out and filming these tiny stories. It’s endearing.
- The Ideal English Major. Another article on why the English major is da best.
- Complete Strangers Pose Together for Portraits (via Visual News). Lovely photo series.
