Handmade felt finger puppets

My friend’s son’s birthday this Saturday. I wasn’t able to come to the birthday party, but I wanted to do something. I don’t know why, but I thought: “finger puppets.” I think I had seen someone make finger puppets a while back and was subconsciously waiting for the opportunity when a finger puppet would be appropriate. I’m going to give them to her on Wednesday as a surprise. (Don’t worry that I’m posting this, posting on this blog is equivalent to telling no one).

So let me walk you through making these finger puppets. It seems like a good idea, right? (Don’t answer that) I made the finger puppet of my friend first (the girl in blue) and I thought it was fun and cute. Then while I was making one based on her husband I thought: “this is really weird, why would anyone want finger puppets of themselves? Themselves…and their immediate family.” But at this point, I had already committed too much time the project and bought the materials.  I was in too deep to go back now.

I was showing Matt and lamenting over my predicament. “How many are you going to make,” he asked, “10?”

“Uh, three?” One for each of the members of the family. They took a little more time than I had anticipated, especially the glasses, so I was feeling less ambitious. Less hopeful that I could churn out the zoo I had fantasized about…

“This is creepy, isn’t it?”

“A little bit.”

So I made some animals to make it normal. 🙂

A chicken, because I like them. A corgi, because I love them. And a black cat, because Carissa likes them.

I have to say, I really enjoy making these. They don’t take a horrendously long time. It’s more like: while I’m making them a person on my shoulder is saying “are you seriously making finger puppets right now when you have so much to do?!?!?”

Yes I did.

My favorite, of course:
