My latest craft projects have been making amigurumi toys for new babies. A perfect quarantine activity. I really like to listen to a podcast and work through them, although they take much longer than they look. Every time I start I have a moment where I I can’t believe I am making each stitch of this toy. (People knit sweaters some time, you guys!). Amigurumi is like that, but a little more satisfying because you can see the pieces come together.
I had seen them before as cute, mostly circular crochet projects and when I had the idea to try them out I thought “why not make something bigger like a full sized stuffed animals, and when searching around I found these creatures in a book called Pica Pau and immediately fell in love with the style and detail. They didn’t necessarily feel like they were for kids. Of course mine never turned out nearly as perfect as the author’s, but if you don’t know what they’re supposed to look like, they don’t look so bad either.
I made the alligator above and a frog (more on this later) about a year ago. But during the pandemic I’ve made….
This dragon is actually pretty big compared to the other stuff I made. I was trying to figure out how to stop the seam from trailing and I haven’t really figured it out still.
My co-worker really likes rabbits but the book didn’t have a rabbit pattern so I just cobbled one together using different animals from her book. I think it turned out really well and the speckled yarn worked out really well.
The frog was the second thing I made after the alligator, so this is actually the second time I made it. I’m not sure I got any better, but I want to point out his pants come off!
Finally this little platypus that is bafflingly shorter than he’s supposed to be. I’m not sure what I did wrong. He’s quite stout.
