The Handwriting Of 10 Famous Typographers. Because you always wanted to know.
DESIGN
- 3 Typography Experts on How to Tell Good Hand-Lettering From the Wannabes. An interesting discussion if you’re in to that kind of thing (typography vs hand lettering, especially). I’ve taken a workshop with Ken Barber!
- Artsy 2014: A Year in Review. A neat project (and cool website) making art more accessible.
- Women are leaving the tech industry in droves. Related to the design profession, at least. You know I’ve mentioned it, hopefully I’m going to work at place that is more respectful.
- Why We Should Design Some Things to Be Difficult to Use. Great article about designing responsibly. Design serves a purpose that isn’t always explicit and it’s up to capable designers to think about the bigger mission. That’s why I liked the “Time Well Spent” video I posted last time.
- At My Lunch Break. These adorable pictures.
SOCIAL
- California has about one year of water left. Will you ration now? The photos for this really drew me in. Pretty scary.
- One Small Town’s Hilariously Ingenious Revenge on Public Urinators. Hint: Super bouncy walls. Also, “pinkelt züruck” sounds super cute.
- Please Touch the Art: 3-D Printing Helps Visually Impaired Appreciate Paintings. Some 3D printing that isn’t to make throw-away toys!
- African Emoji CEO: Apple ‘Missed The Whole Point’ With Its Diverse Emojis. Yes, but I also have mixed feelings about their example alternative. Probably in response to this emoji release.
- Meet the Unlikely Airbnb Hosts of Japan (via NY Times). This was a super great article about AirBNB’s presence in Japan and a great article that introduces what User Experience (UX) researchers do.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
- The frontline of climate change: Alaska village must relocate as sea ice thins. Absolutely terrible. This is happening at the same time US politicans are being ignorant. (Thank goodness for Jon Stewart)
- Your First Look at Google’s Reconfigurable, See-Through HQ. Ummm, doesn’t this remind anyone else of a certain scary sci-fi scenario? The kind of crazy proposed architecture for the Google HQ.
- Two Women Find Out They May Be Twins Thanks to YouTube. Can you even imagine?
- No, mornings don’t make you moral (via the New Yorker). Thank goodness! This article talks about how there is a perception about the goodness—nay, purity—of people who are early risers. Some people just work better at other times.
- World’s Best Computer Science Program Tells Wrong Students They Got In. Yikes, CMU.
MEDIA
- Oliver Sacks on Learning He Has Terminal Cancer. Beautiful article by one of my favorite authors. So sorry to see you go and hope for the best remaining months possible, Oliver.
- Try The World food subscription. Like, I don’t want to be an ad or anything, but I saw this exotic food subscription service and would totally love to do something similar! I haven’t actually tried it so I can’t recommend, but a pretty neat idea.
- 20 Embarrassing Phrases Even Smart People Misuse. Funny, because I didn’t even feel smart to begin with. “Sneak peek” inspired me to make this little comic:
- I Switched to a Standing Desk, So Now You Should, Too (via The New Yorker). Some satire to ground yourself.
- 14 Stunning Finalist Photos from the World Photography Awards. Worth GOOD Magazine’s annoying gallery interface (for the most part).
- Danny DeVito at 70: A National Treasure on Sex, Drugs and Family (via The Rolling Stone). I have been watching Always Sunny so I had to click on this article. It’s a well-written story on DeVito.
