Norwegian travel documents get a re-design, and they’re pretty awesome.

Better late than never!
DESIGN
- 6 Legendary Photographers Tell The Stories Behind Their Favorite Unseen Photographs. I admit I didn’t really know who these photographers were, but it didn’t make me like their photos or their stories any less. Not to long of a read. I love hearing the backstories behind artwork.
- The Complexity Of Famous Writers’ Prose, Visualized (via Design.Co). So lovely! Take a look how Shakespeare and MLK measure up!
- New Anthony Burrill posters use innocent victims to lampoon US gun laws (via itsnicethat). Some meaty design work.
- Famous Novels Transformed into Book Art. Always torn (HA!) about book art. How can they just destroy the story like that? But also, it’s so lovely!
- Letterpress Printers Are Running Out Of @ Symbols And Hashtags. You’re welcome, letterpress printers. Love, Social Media.
- Islington Has Issues | London: The Information Capital. Pretty neat series of infographics on London.
- Google Ventures On 8 Shortcuts For Better, Faster Design Research (via co.Design). I can vouch that doing a bunch of interviews in a row helps you see patterns quickly.
-
The Electric Tea Kettle Gets A Makeover (via co.Design). i can dig it. I want to get Igor one!
SOCIAL
- The New Sick Man of Europe: the European Union. This is a long research document on European relations, but the chart on the bottom of the first page is really entertaining, it’s what major EU countries think about each other.
- Is This Working? (via This American Life). Oh my gosh, so good! This american life episode on problems in the education system. It was so well done but still sad.
- My thesis advisor also knows this is something I’m really interested in and showed me the incredible projects going on around accessibility like Microsoft/Future Cities Catapult/Guide Dog’s Independence Day project and this glove for deaf/blind people to communicate with each other.
- Wearables Are Totally Failing the People Who Need Them Most. This was a good article and it made me really angry about how apps and now wearables are trying to take a piece of the over-saturated rich market when they could really be used to help people. I’ve been really interested in accessibility in design recently.
- At First This Looked Like A Normal Restaurant, But Then I Realized The Amazing Truth. Love it! Restaurant that hires deaf workers. Giving them an opportunity to join a part of the workforce they wouldn’t have been able to other wise (rough quote).
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
- High levels of cancer-causing arsenic in rice – so why isn’t it regulated in our food? This was more than a little alarming.
- English 3.0. 20-minute documentary on how texting has affected language—spoiler alert: it’s not ruining language. Check it out, I liked it!
- What Are The Benefits Of Being Left-Handed? (via PBS) This video title was a little misleading, but its still a pretty interesting (and well-designed!) video on the brain and left-handedness.
- The One Extraordinary Skill All Prodigies Share (via design.co). Dang it.
- Are Extroverts Really Happier Than Introverts? (via Design.Co). I think they do more things that are socially accepted as ‘fun,’ but it doesn’t mean I don’t know how to watch a documentary and knit on a Saturday night.
MEDIA
- Tom Magliozzi, Popular Co-Host Of NPR’s ‘Car Talk,’ Dies At 77 (via NPR). The saddest news on the month. It was like a little piece of America died. I had to list to a bunch of his recordings after I heard. Rest in peace.
- Millennials Navigate The Ups And Downs Of Cohabitation (via NPR). I thought this was an interesting article even though I’m not in a place where I’m being asked to co-habitate with people.
- World/Spectrum/Archive for De Volkskrant, OOG. I thought this was such a neat project! This system intelligently reads news articles from all over the world and reports back if they’re mostly negative or positive and displays it visually with a top article. I love the way it looks too.
- These Sickeningly Beautiful Photos Of Rotting Food Remind You How Much Food You Waste (via Co.Exist). It is what it says, glamorous rotting food photos.
- You are not a storyteller – Stefan Sagmeister. I love my spicy designer.
- A New Acoustic Instrument That Creates Sounds like a Digital Synthesizer. Pretty slick, Nick.
