Another one of my friend’s video company’s movies. If you don’t have time for the whole thing, the climax is definitely 2:20. Paul’s “two-step” (which is what he calls it, however he doesn’t appear to moving his lower half at all).
DESIGN
- The 9 Biggest Clichés In Movie Posters. I’m for anything that tells people to appreciate the thought and care that goes into creative design works.
- Go Where Raisins Swell Into Grapes, And Lemons Light The Sky (via NPR). These are lovely, take a look at these photographs of a tiny world!
- An entire year of selfies transformed into one animated GIF. I know this guy! I watched him change his facebook pictures for a year not knowing he had any actual plan (he’s just that type)! Check it out!
- Ballantine’s Takes Skateboarding To The Opera (via Co.Create). Very cool intersection of…artforms? mediums? I have never been to an opera and it’s on my to-do list.
- A Record Made Of Ice That Actually Plays (Co.Design). Things like this make me want to be an industrial designer. But I also think: that doesn’t seems safe to use with a record player.
- Some People comic. Story with great perspective about how we don’t know what other people are going through and how connected our lives all are. Recommend!
- Bret Victor – Inventing on Principle. This is a long lecture, but very interesting for innovators, designers, and programmers, and probably anyone in business. It’s about programming but it has implications to finding the root of problems and improving things we accept.
SOCIAL
- Stefan Sagmeister: The power of time off (TEDTalk). Words of wisdom from my main man. Sagmeister has a theory that we should work longer (like past our current retirement age) but have hiatuses throughout our careers where we can explore and rejuvenate. I would love this.
- Five Reasons Why You Should Probably Stop Using Antibacterial Soap (via Smithsonian). This was really interesting: they’re going to ban the use of antibacterial chemical triclosan used in consumer antibacterial products eventually. I knew that ubiquitous use wasn’t good for us, but it’s neat that something is actually being done about it!
- Why it’s a good idea to stop eating shrimp. It’s not just about being healthy, it’s about the health of the environment. Yes, I was super sad after I read this though. This, of course, lead to reading this article about foods that are killing the planet.
- Muslim ‘Hipsters’ Turn A Joke Into A Serious Conversation . Dig it.
- For First Time In Memory, Icelandic Police Shoot And Kill (via NPR). I couldn’t believe this! They made a great comparison between Iceland and the US because Iceland actually does have a good number of guns in their population as well. Not nearly as many as us, of course. We have more guns that people (“101.05 firearms per 100 people”).
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
- Mapping Emotions On The Body: Love Makes Us Warm All Over | photos (via NPR). These are neat justifications for all those lovely emotive metaphors we use. For some reason I consider this a point for the humanities.
- How Y’all, Youse and You Guys Talk. I think everyone might have seen this already, but in case you didn’t! Take a short quiz to see where your speech patterns fall geographically. It’s not just pronunciation but word choice too!
- Puzzle of Koalas’ Unusually Deep Voices Solved: A Very Special Organ. I think it would be funny if they had a winnky face after the title….also a good article though if you like knowing stuff about animals.
- Raven gets attacked by a porcupine then proves it’s really freakin’ smart. I want a raven now. There’s a video of a raven sledding down a roof on a mayonnaise jar lid. I want a pet that does the things I would do as a bird!
