It’s been a long time, but to be fair, I wasn’t on my computer as much in Switzerland and thus wasn’t reading as many articles. While I was putting these together I was remembering how wonderful each was. I hope you check some of them out, they’re a real treat.

DESIGN
- Beauty VS Usability: Why the discussion about iOS looking ‘dated’ misses the point. Exactly. Loved this and ended up watching a follow-up lecture from someone I worked with at Google this summer. Pretty exciting. Speaking of: I use peartrees as my bookmarking tool and over the summer they re-did their design and not only do I think it’s pretty unattractive and uninspired, its much less useable. I had a really good system in place for using it to make these posts and now it’s like several clicks to do what I want.
- Coca-Cola Invents 16 Crazy Caps to Turn Empty Bottles Into Useful Objects Ogilvy’s ‘2nd Lives’ campaign. I’m glad for the effort.
- Strategy by Design (via FastCompany). Yup, we’re kinda important.
- Edgar Wright – How to Do Visual Comedy. This was an interesting analysis of filming. It was interesting hearing about another medium, is all.
SOCIAL
- Louisiana Loses Its Boot. This was a long but super beautiful article about the situation in Louisiana framed around their map and how it’s misrepresenting the actual live-able lands left there. Really lovely and reminded me of my thesis work.
- I Ghostwrite Chinese Students’ Ivy League Admissions Essays. This was an article that Carissa said that I really liked about…well a ghost writer of Chinese student essays.
- Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed. Interesting and a little depressing article about what the 9 to 5 can do to you.
- Inspiring Photos Of Children Expressing Their True Genders (via CoExist). Adorable.
- How The Meritocracy Myth Affects Women In Technology (via NPR). Fighting the good fight. Seriously, I’ve been thinking about it maybe a little too much since it could be my future. I’m really fortunate thought that I’ll be going to the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in October. Very excited.
- 5 Simple Office Policies That Make Danish Workers Way More Happy Than Americans (via CoExist). Take note, startups trying to lure millennials.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
- Jason Box’s research into Greenland’s dark snow raises more concerns about climate change. Be scared, be really scared. This isn’t just my environmentally bleeding heart, this is you, me, and Greenland! The ice in Greenland is turning black and it’s the darkest this year than it’s ever been.
- Why The U.S. Chills Its Eggs And Most Of The World Doesn’t (via NPR). I had noticed this and it’s very valuable information. I know some of my Chinese roommates last year didn’t refrigerate their eggs once they bought them…I hope they don’t get moldy eggs. ALSO, did you know you can freeze eggs?! YOU CAN. This lady recommended just breaking them into muffin tins, freezing, and then storing them in a bag or whatever, pulling them out as needed.
MEDIA
- Glenn Gould In Rapture : Krulwich Wonders… (via NPR). This is a recording of Glenn Gould performing a Bach piece and it’s absolutely riveting to watch him play (Eva, I think you’d like it!). I think sometimes when you hear the classical music you are so focused on how things work together that you forget the complexity of a single part. Watch and be amazed.
- Holdout (via 99percentinvisible). I’ve been getting into the 99percentinvisible podcast again even though there’s absolutely no room in my life for me to have another podcast. But every time I’d intermittently heard an episode I really liked them. Like I refer to this episode about waiting all the time. I’m becoming more and more enamored by story telling and the thought of missing these stories does make me sad. I want to know all the things and feel all the experiences they’re willing to share. There’s beauty in discovery that I really appreciate. I’m not saying this is the best episode from them you’ll ever here, but I think it’s an accurate representation of the tone of their podcasts. - J.R.R. Tolkien Reveals TRUE Meaning Of ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ In Unearthed Audio Recording. Just to warn you, this isn’t as much as a breakthrough as the title makes it sound, but it was interesting.
- Tom Waits Real Gone Interview Make It Rain Live. I was so happy to know learn that this is what Tom Waits is like.
