5: West coast goals

I guess I should get in the hang of posting on this again. Matt left on Wednesday morning and I’ve not begun this new phase of my life in San Francisco.

…I guess.

I mean, I guess that’s what is inevitably happening although I don’t feel like I have much control over it. It feels more like: I wake up. I’m here. So, I guess I have to go about living. I kind of wish I hadn’t left a break for myself at all. That, the second Matt left I would just start work so that I wouldn’t have time to think about what I’m doing here.

And then there’s another part of my that’s always feels guilty about missing out because I’m in a new city and I don’t have to work during the weekdays yet so I should be exploring, exploring, exploring! But I’ve also been on vacation for over a month and I kind of just want to watch movies in bed…

And there’s a third, fearfully practical side of me that knows I shouldn’t do anything too dramatic until I start earning an income.

But I thought today, since now it’s official and I’m here and I’ve signed a contract, that I have to do normal people things and I thought it would make the most sense to organize what was important to me so I don’t forget what I want to do and accidentally do nothing. (Especially since I’ll have an hour commute!)

1. Try a new place to eat once a week. I know this will be a super easy one. But I also know that I’ve only gone out to eat a handful of times in the last two years so I thought it would be fun to challenge myself and try a bunch of places in the area that have to be new. Whether it’s a full meal or a scone: it’s happening.

2. Ride my bike to/from south bay. I was thinking at least once or twice a week after work. But this would involved a) getting a bike and then b) practicing going long distances and c) not being terrified of the traffic.

3. Go to an event once a week. Maybe this is a little ambitious for my inner hermit, but maybe not. Design lectures, tech talks, poetry slams, open mics, comedy shows, music nights…I want to try! Any recommendations?

4. Get involved with something outside of work. My first idea was the volunteer at a library again since I enjoyed it so much in Denver, but we’ll see what else surfaces.

5. And this ominous list I compiled of things I want to learn, do, or get better at:

  • Drawing
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Dancing
  • Languages (German & Vietnamese)
  • Ukulele
  • Singing
  • Knitting socks & gloves
  • Watercolor/Gouache
  • Public speaking
  • Calligraphy
  • Bookbinding
  • Baking bread

I have this secret plan to pretend my commutes are classes and try to something different every day or week and pretend it’s a class (in between reading and listening to audiobooks). Or, focus on one subject really hard for 100 days. What do you think!? I’m kind of excited to go through my list of things because, if you haven’t noticed, it’s mostly fun things :D.
