DESIGN
- Rise and shine: the daily routines of history’s most creative minds (via The Guardian). This was a super interesting article and made me want to read the book.
- AIMIA/AGO Photography prize nominee, Chino Otsuka. I saw her photographs at the Art Gallery of Ontario while I was in Canada and really liked to her work and I’m not sure why. She combines images of her present self with her past self.
- A father photographs the world of his autistic son. Beautiful images and short summary.
- Tom Crabtree (of Manual) interview. Loved his work.
- Van Gogh Teaches Us How To Keep Life Interesting : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture (via NPR). Article showing and describing the different studies that Van Gogh did of the same scene. Don’t be afraid to iterate, guys!
- Hiring a designer: how to review portfolios. You know, just because. I hope someone will hire me because of how I think and not as much because of how I design.
SOCIAL
- How To Deal With Cat Calling. I have never gotten cat called as much as I have in Pittsburgh, including when I lived in New York. This is not a brag–I haven’t changed at all–it’s a problem. For some reason its acceptable in Pittsburgh for men to be pigs. I was complaining about it to Carissa and she sent me this link, which i thought was interesting, but not the solution. Women shouldn’t constantly be battling to defend themselves, by default we should be treated like equals. Carissa sent me these tips that I think are much more helpful (please click and a point will be made). A woman named Hannah Price also chose to photographer her harassers, something I always have to urge to do (to publicly shame), but I also don’t want to get assaulted for it (why is that a legitimate thing that could happen).
- Ads Reveal Horrifying Sexism in Google Autocomplete. More sexim, what do you know? Very powerful ads.
- 5 Genuinely Offensive Font Choices That Must Be Stopped. Why is it ok that some people are picking racist fonts? Answer: it’s not. Stop it.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
- The ocean is broken. A really sad account of the changes that are happening in the ocean. A pretty quick read and worth remembering.
- Doodling in a meeting? Maybe you’re just drawing inspiration. Yes! Scientific evidence that doodling is good (…for concentration).
- Deadly lake turns animals into statues. Beautiful photos, sad circumstance.

- America’s Mood Map: Find Which State Matches Your Personality (via Time). This was more interesting than accurate. Take a short quiz and see what state you ‘belong’ to according to their general countenance.
- Ridiculous Portraits from the National Beard & Mustache Championships by Greg Anderson. Just because.
- The Pronunciation of European Typefaces. Neat little how-to for designers.
